Preparing for an international trip that involves outdoor activities like hiking and biking requires a blend of smart travel logistics and targeted gear selection. Many Park City Mountain Sports Club members are preparing now for exciting international travel, including epic hiking and biking trips. Notably, about 45 of our Club members will be heading to Majorca, Spain at the end of September for six days of biking around the stunning island and its mountains. Others are planning equally exciting, active trips to a myriad of places abroad.
Although many of you are seasoned international travelers, we thought it might be useful to have a reminder of how to prepare and what to have in your backpacks. For others, it might serve as your checklist. No matter what adventure you have planned, feeling confident and prepared for both the travel piece and the adventure should help you feel relaxed, excited, and ready to go. Thanks to Jackie Oken for contributing this section.
BEFORE YOU GO
WHAT TO PUT IN A DAYPACK FOR HIKING - When you are out on the trail abroad, your daypack should cover you for safety, weather changes, and hydration.
WHAT TO PUT IN A BACKPACK/PANNIER FOR BIKING - Whether you are day-riding or multi-day touring, a biking pack needs to ensure mechanical self-reliance and comfort over long hours in the saddle.
Traveling internationally with your outdoor gear packed and ready to go opens the door to incredible adventures and unforgettable landscapes. By taking care of the logistics ahead of time and packing thoughtfully, you can depart with total peace of mind - ready to embrace every trail, turn, and new horizon that comes your way. Bon voyage and safe, well-prepared travels to all our Club wanderlusters!
A huge thank you goes to Jeri and Rob Brooke for generously hosting the annual Independence Day event at their home. Talking to Jeri, we’re not sure how many years they’ve hosted this, but it is more than ten! It is a huge organizational feat. Four hikes (one moderate plus, two moderate, one easy), one MTB, one road bike event and a horseshoe tournament. All the events kick off at different times with the goal of all finishing at around the same time for brats and potluck. As always, it was a delicious spread. Thank you also to the volunteers that helped make it happen – from activity leaders to set up to kitchen help, to grilling and serving to clean up. Thanks to Tony Edwards, Sheree Anshel, Dean Fogel, Lisa Hunter, Ruth Mather, Ellen Sherk, Sheri Thomas, Dan Albano, Chuck Mollard, Marvin Kabatznick, Rob, Mike Benson, Kathy Ritter, Dennis Fish, Cheri Dostal, Vince Gilotti, Ann Deutschlander, Barb Maben and Stan Hooley, and anyone I inadvertently missed. We’ve counted this as one event below but really it is seven events in one, plus a barbecue!
It’s been great seeing new events come on the calendar this year – from backcountry skiing in the winter to fly-fishing, rock-climbing, motor bike riding, a barn dance and now running. If you are interested in leading a new event, please let me know on stephensonkate38@gmail.com.
You can see photos of many of these events on our Club private Facebook group:

Our TGIF potlucks have made one thing clear: we have a lot of great cooks in this club. After years of people saying, “You have to send me that recipe,” we decided to collect them in one place — our online cookbook.
Check it out here: Club Recipes
If you make something that always disappears quickly at parties, we’d love to include your recipe. Just follow the format at the end of the linked page above and send it to recipe@pcmsc.org.

JANUARY 2026 President's Message
Another fantastic Snow Blast party is in the books. Everyone turned out in their finery. The drink flowed, the food was excellent and I heard there was a lot of dancing. (Sadly Maggi, Jim and I were unable to attend as we sing in Park City Singers Choir, and our concert was the same night). A lot of fun was had by everyone.
Huge thanks to Irene Tendler for leading the event. Thanks also to Sue Johnson, Lisa Hunter, Deb Black, JoAnn Hertzing, Rich Marx, Beth and Matt (candyman) Hartung and Diane Jamail for all their help in making this happen – it takes a village!
We all turn up at these events and enjoy the event. I thought it would be interesting to have a “behind the scenes” look at what it takes to put an event like this together. It all starts with venue selection. Irene reviewed a number of venues last year, visiting each in person, understanding costs, layouts etc. We need a venue that can seat 120 people, a DJ and a dance floor. Irene then presents the options to the board, along with proposed dates and we vote on it. Once that happens, Irene and Maggi spend time with the venue discussing terms and then with the chef agreeing on the menu. We get quotes for the dance floor and Irene books the DJ. Jeri and Irene keep a spreadsheet of who is coming and who has paid etc.
Once the date and venue are secured, Irene creates a "save the date" event for the calendar and sends out several emails letting Club members know the event is open for booking.
Irene then looks for volunteers to help with the event. Lisa Hunter collected checks. Sue ordered 32 poinsettias from Walmart and bought ribbon for the bows. Irene, Sue and JoAnn met at Mary Lynne’s house to make thirty-two bows to decorate the poinsettias. Luckily Sue is an expert at making bows and taught the group! Irene bought pounds of chocolate kisses to go on each table. Matt arrived early to put the candy on the table. Diane, Deb, Beth and Lisa put the bows on the poinsettias and put them on each table to make it look festive. Lisa and Deb registered people as they arrived.
At the end of the evening Irene and Rich Marx stayed late to ensure the dance floor was dismantled. And Rich handled payments of the deposit and balance.
With a heavy heart we also thank Kathie Marriott, who passed away very recently, for graciously allowing us to use her membership at Park Meadows Country Club.
Whenever you sign our activity release forms, you’re asked to write down an emergency contact phone number. Please don’t ignore this and please write legibly, as it could help our leaders in a very stressful situation. No one expects to use it, but something very unexpected might happen while you’re out with the Club. It doesn’t matter if that contact lives close by or not, but it may help the leader, emergency personnel and possibly a hospital find someone who should know what happened to you and where you’ve been taken.
So leaders, please make sure each person fills out an emergency contact number on the sign-in sheet and those of you participating in club activities, please understand why you’re being asked to supply it.
In case you missed it, we now have a Club Facebook Group. It is a private group. Only members can join, and we ask that you agree to the set of “rules” governing how we act in the group and answer two questions. The link to join is:

Finally, a hold the date for your calendars. We will be holding the annual Bash at Jeremy Ranch Country Club on Saturday March 7. More information to follow.

I’ve been coming to Park City for an annual ski trip since my early 20’s. When Husband Andrew and I were ready to retire and leave our life-long home in the SF Bay Area, Park City quickly rose to the top of the list. That was seven years ago. After four years enjoying life in Park City, Andrew very suddenly passed away.
I’ve spent the past three years figuring out who I am as not part of a couple. It’s been a journey! Staying busy with friends and social activities has helped tremendously. Though Andrew and I joined PCMSC when we first moved here on the recommendation of our Newcomers friends, it’s since being single that I have opened my Jeremy Ranch home to a few TGIF events. I’ve also put together a PCMSC cat-ski trip to Soldier Mountain to take place in March. I enjoy hosting social events, and I love to ski; volunteering for PCMSC has been a great way to meet people and make new friends.
Next time you see me on a hike or other PCMSC event, please say hi!

We moved to Park City in 2014 to help turn around and sell backcountry.com. By the winter of 15/16 we had achieved that sale and I was ready to ski for 100 days, something I hadn’t done since college. Bob Johnson, a neighbor and friend from the 80s/90s in New Jersey had introduced us to the Park City Mountain Sports Club. I began to ski with Vince Gillotti every Monday and Thursday at Deer Valley to get some variety in my ambition. Skiing with Vince, a former Pennsylvanian instructor, was fun; we did a variety of trails and met many new folks who would become longtime friends.
After that first year, I was asked by Vince/MaryLou and Bill/Pris Waston to help out by volunteering to lead a group. It became one of the best decisions I have made during our time here in Park City.
While I had some experience, instructing and race coaching during different sections my ski career, leading is really about reading the “white room”: you make sure people are having fun both on the chair and hill. Sure, there are some drills that people at different levels may want to practice. Vince and Mary Lou as well as Bill and Pris Watson keep you abreast of YouTube ski videos to help with that. If volunteering to help lead a group is something you want to pursue, I would encourage you to send a note to Ellen Sherk who runs winter sports, and volunteer at Park City/Canyons or Deer Valley. You will ski with members at your talent level and it’s a great way to get some fresh air and meet more people than many volunteer gigs allow.
Special thanks to Jon Burke, Steve Peer and Jane Sagerman who have been co-leaders with me in the “non-stop” group at Deer Valley over the years. It’s been a privilege to ski with Mike Borelli, Bob Johnson, Marvin Kabatznick, Erin Shaffer, Chuck Mollard (when the road to Snowbird was closed), Gary Gegick, Patrick Arnault, Bjorn Liencres, Sophia Lucey, David Enberg, Kristen Hanson, Rich Marx, Dave Klinges, Barb LeMaric and the incomparable duo Teresa and Terry Polistina as well as others who have changed our life in Park City. We met these people all through our participation in Deer Valley PCMSC sessions.
